My performance at the coffee shop quickly caught the attention of the hostel owners, who offered me a new opportunity—this time at the reception desk. Despite having no prior experience managing a hostel, I accepted the role with enthusiasm and a mindset focused on learning and adapting. The transition challenged me to expand my skills in communication, conflict resolution, and fast-paced problem-solving. It was a space where no two days looked the same, and I thrived in the dynamic rhythm of the environment.
One of my core responsibilities was managing the hostel’s booking schedule—a task that demanded both precision and creativity. I treated it like a high-stakes game of Tetris, where every reservation had to fit perfectly, with no room for overlap or error. This required me to develop a strong sense of spatial and temporal awareness, balancing room availability with arrival and departure times, group sizes, and guest preferences. Solving double-bookings, late arrivals, or last-minute cancellations became a daily challenge that I learned to manage with agility. My ability to visualise timelines and stay calm under pressure allowed me to maintain control, even when the system was stretched to its limits.
Beyond logistics, I was the first point of contact for guests from all over the world, which meant assertiveness and empathy became essential tools. I handled high volumes of daily interactions—checking guests in and out, solving problems in real time, and making sure everyone felt heard, safe, and welcome. My customer service skills reached a new level, as I learned to manage expectations, communicate clearly, and create meaningful experiences for travellers from every background. This role shaped my ability to multitask, stay grounded, and lead with both efficiency and emotional intelligence.
